National Day(s) of Listening

The National Day of Listening is November 27, 2009. On the day after Thanksgiving, set aside some time to record a conversation with someone you care about. Share your story! You can interview anyone you choose: a relative, a friend, a teacher, a foreign friend or visitor, someone from your class or the neighborhood. Do it in a foreign language, and then send us the files so we can feature them on our website! Check out Michigan Radio's Story Corps site for simple instructions and inspiration (http://www.nationaldayoflistening.org/participate/) and then get your recording gear out. Don't have any? Contact Phill Cameron at the LRC to come in and record here with us. And, by the way: it does not have to be November 27 -- everyday is a good day for listening and having a conversation.
Wanna get started right away? Use the Audio Dropbox application below to record and submit a story file. We will collect your stories and interviews and post them on the LRC webpage. Please put your name and the language you are using in the 'name' box (e.g. John Smith - Finnish)

Here is a first drawing of the North Quad residence hall and academic center.
If all goes well, we expect to be in our new abode in Aug. 2010. The clock is ticking now. If you click on the picture an enlarged version will open.

You can see the Bell Tower and MLB in the middle, the new North Quad is highlighted right above it.

Here we can see our very own Jan Stewart holding the 'navel' of the building. Without this pin, the whole thing would collapse.

Monday, March 2

10 to 2 pm LRC Table: Programs, Workshops, General Info
The mission of the Language Resource Center at the University of Michigan is to serve, support, and promote the study and instruction of foreign languages, cultures, and literatures at all levels within the academic community. Take a look at all the resources the LRC has to offer to both students and faculty

1 to 3 pm Arabic: The Flagship Program
The University of Michigan Arabic Language Flagship Program is a three-year program that provides funding for studies in Arabic language and culture at the undergraduate level. The program also offers opportunities to study abroad through the Language Flagship Center in Alexandria, Egypt. Graduate student Spencer Scouville will give a short presentation about his experiences learning Arabic, and Arabic Language Flagship Coordinator Sofia Rosenberg will promote, and answer questions about, the ALF program.

10 to 2 pm OIP: Study Abroad Info
The University of Michigan's Office of International Programs (OIP) administers over 90 programs, with more than 26 languages spoken, in 41 countries on 6 continents. OIP programs are designed to enrich the undergraduate experience by offering opportunities for cultural immersion, intensive language learning, and participation in another educational system. Students earn Michigan in-residence credit for coursework and may apply Michigan awarded financial aid to program costs.

11 to 12 pm Aramaic and Some Curious Things About It: Eric Reymond
The language of Aramaic is one of the earliest attested languages that continues to be spoken down to the present time. It is known that Aramaic is the language spoken by Jesus, but the language is also associated with the supernatural and with demonic possession. Such associations are reflected in contemporary movies such as The Passion of the Christ, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Stigmata.

12 to 1.30 pm Mayan Friendship Bracelets and History: Tati Calixto
Spend some time with the energetic Tati who will dispense information about South American cultures and teach you to braid friendship bracelets.

1.30 to 3 pm OBAMA SPEAKS INDONESIAN, DO YOU? - Agustini
Did you know that the Indonesian language uses the Roman Alphabets and that there are over 200 million speakers of Indonesian, making it the seventh most widely spoken language in the world? Come and check out the Indonesian language table at the Language Resource Center to learn some interesting facts about Indonesia (the country) and Indonesian (the language and people).

1 to 4 pm Career Center: Careers in/with Languages
The U-M Career Center will staff an information table with handouts and resources for students to explore their career options using their foreign language skills.

Thursday, March 5

2:30 to 3:30 Ojibwe: Language and Traditions: Meg Noori
Howard Kimewon, Meg Noori and the students of Ojibwe 323 will read excerpts from the story "Esibanens gii bi Dagooshin", sing "Hail to the Victors" in Ojibwe and share why they enjoy learning the ancient language of the Great Lakes.

10 to 11.30 Welcome to Vietnam and Enjoy the Buffalo Ride: Thuy'Anh T Nguyen
Get to know Vietnam, a Southeast Asian country, through music and images. Riding the buffalo is challenging, but you can try to learn some simple Vietnamese. Come and explore more fun.
